Hello all,

I've owned my 1974 Case 444 since 1985. Has been a reliable beast. Over time, the power of the hydraulic drive system has degraded. Now feels like 5HP instead of 14HP. Hope to get some diagnostic guidance from forum on most efficient diagnosis. Thanks a bunch. Look forward to informative exchanges.

Kevin, can you begin with us by describing under what conditions the hydraulics feel weak? Is this only when travelling forward, up a hill, hot, using a log splitter, raising/lowering the deck or snowblower, etc etc.

That will help us quickly focus the discussion.

There are a few super simple items to note right up front.

First, does it have appropriate oil in the system? We generally recommend 15W40 motor oil for use around Michigan.

Second, if the travel/drive motor feels weak, this is often the result of a simple adjustment or ball joint replacement at the travel control valve under the chassis. Have you looked at that linkage or adjusted the ball joint?
