I'm helping a friend with his 3012 (unknown engine at this time) that has a steering problem. The steering shaft and gear (4 -C26326/C33940) are skipping on the steering gear (12 - C33309). My guess is that the steering gear bushings are worn (13 - C33308), but I have not gotten into it yet.

Besides the 2 bushings on the steering shaft (16 - C15096, 9 - C27501 lower) what hold the steering shaft in place ?

While we are working this tractor, what other high wear items should we check ?

The #7 shims above the steering gear are designed to be serviced for adjustment.

Pull shims from above the gear and place them below the gear, allowing the gear to move higher in the chassis.

In probably 70% of the cases I assist, this alone is enough to stop the skipping and tighten up the steering.

If the gear teeth are damaged, then new steering gear kits are available.

Ok ! Seems too simple !!

But to ask my second question again, what hold the end of the steering shaft in place ?

Should be a roll pin through the steering wheel and shaft. #10 in the diagram.

My steering gear recently stripped out. (The big gear not the little one) a bunch of teeth just bent or broke off on my 3018. I contacted the guy that sold the tractor to me since he has a lot of case/ingersoll tractors and spare parts. He sold me the big steering gear off of a case 444. The older gear is almost twice as thick and bolted up fine and has worked flawlessly. If this is the problem with yours I recommend getting a gear from and older tractor. In this case it's true " they don't build them like they used too"

Yes as Porkchop said, the new replacement steering sector gear is steel and not cast iron, and not as heavy as the old ones. I currently use a few new ones, but I keep them greased well so they last. If your skilled with a welder and angle grinder or Dremel tool the worn teeth can be built back up and ground. Tedious work but its cheaper than a new gear for those on a budget.

We got the gear from Brian and it is in. Tight fit for guys with fat fingers ! Some long over due maintenance is next.

Just wondering. Staring at the gear from underneath while the owner turned the steering wheel, I realize that only a small percentage of the teeth are used, as the wheel is moved lock-to-lock. Is it worth it to shorten/length the drag link and possibly even reposition the gear away from the center so that only one end of the gear is used so that if it does wear, you can simply adjust it to the other end ?
