3014 vanguard engine won't start

2633 Views 48 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  mryeti117
Hello as I am new to this forum.
I have a 3014 vanguard twin 14hp.
Model #294447 Type 1145-A2
After snow blowing with my SB38 snowcaster the other day my GT won't start.
I changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs and a new battery
It just back fires through the carburetor now when I try starting it.
Getting good spark.
We did a cold compression check on it and #2 cylinder had 100psi and #1 cylinder had 150psi.
Any help would be awesome!

I recall stories of some strange things happening when the diodes fail in the kill wiring harness. The VG's use 2 magneto coils powered by magnets on the flywheel, with a Y harness to the ignition switch, which grounds out the coils when turned to the off position. This Y harness has 2 diodes in it to keep the coils from cross feeding each other. If one of the diodes failed in the closed position, one coil could back feed the other out of time?

Here is one thread from a "Diode" search in the search bar above.

Since the last time I used my tractor blowing snow it won't start.
I changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs and bought a new battery.
While trying to start it it backfires back up through the carb.
I am getting good spark.
We did a compression check on it and #2 cylinder had 100psi
#1 cylinder had 150psi.
Not sure if the pressure relief valve broke or gaskets are worn out somewhere or if I just need a valve adjustment.
I have total permanent disability and the thought of shoveling snow and walking behind a mower is not good.
Not looking for pitty, I just need to get my tractor back up and running if I kind of know what to tell a repair shop.
Thanks.
I have went through most of the 3014 briggs vanguard posts on your website and I must say that I have learned a lot already.

Now that's just what we need to help you out
How was the engine running before it stop running ?
Do you have fresh gas ? have you checked your timing?

It was running just fine that's why I'm a little flabbergasted.
Yes all new gas. I siphoned the old gas out. I do not have the tools to check the timing

You say it has spark.

Does it fire if you feed some starting fluid or dribble a bit of gas in the carb?

Thanks for responding Brian.
I have tried that with a little gas a few times.
It does not.
It just back fires and pops the same as if I am trying to start it normally.

We used a spark tester on it.
