Folks,

Am plugging away on my '78 Case 446 and noticed that there's a noticeable amount of axial play in the rear axles. Not sure what's the maximum allowable play for these axles. There are no leaks around the axle seals but you can see and hear the axles moving in and out as the tractor moves. I reviewed the transaxle manuals and was unable to find anything there. It's entirely possible that I overlooked something though.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

That is common on these tractors, especially when they have a few years on them. It will cause no harm, but there are shims available to take up some of the end play. You will have to open up the rear diff case (after taking the back of the tractor apart to drop the case) and remove the axle clips and shim to eliminate the play.
