Alternate Steering Wheel for 224

750 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  scottym
I've been gifted a brand new steering wheel from a buddy of mine that requires a 40 spline 11/16" shaft. So I'm trying to source one that I can cut off and weld onto my 224's steering shaft.
So I'm in-search-of a 40 spline 11/16" shaft (length doesn't matter) that I can cut off and use. Any ideas welcome.

What is the diameter of the 224's shaft? Is there enough room you could drill a cross hole in the new wheel, and a matching hole in the shaft? I the wheel wont slide on the shaft it would be simple to drill it out. Or if the wheel is too loose a sheet metal bushing could fill in the gap.

Cheers,
Gordy
Thanks Gordy....steering wheel is splined 11/16" and my 224 shaft is beat up and worn 5/8 with a 3/8" hole drilled through the key way.

So a 5/8 id x 3/4 od bushing, drill the wheel to 3/4 and a matching 3/8 hole in the wheel hub and you will be good to go.

A strip of sheet metal or steel banding wrapped around the shaft would be work too. With on need to drill out the splined bore.

A 3/8" hole is huge in a 5/8" shaft. It does not leave much meat left.

Pay attention to the dish of the steering wheel as it could put the level of the rim of the wheel higher or lower than factory.

Could be a 3/16 hole, the 224 I bought had a 3" spacer under the aftermarket wheel, they used a keyed gear hub as the base amd the spacers, I hated it! Interfered with my snowblower auger crank, hands hit the edge of the hood. I took the spacer out and am going to put a factory wheel back on.

So is it possible to remove a pinned steering wheel from a 1978 220 without destroying the steering wheel? I need bushings I believe, up top somewhere,on the steering shaft, have not looked at it in awhile.edit: OOPs, didn't mean to hijack the thread.
