Another Case with a bad left cyl

Well I sure have an aptitude for finding Case tractors with a bad left cyl. I"m going to go look at a late 70's 446 that has a bum left cyl with no compression. He said he was mowing and his neighbor came over to shoot the crap so he got off the 446 and let it idle for about 15 minutes and all of a sudden it started to run badly with no noise I guess.

So he got it back to the garage and did a comp test which showed zip. He says it turns over smoothly with no noise and all this happened last year.

So he gave up on the Case and he jumped ship, he went and bought himself a Steiner tractor.

Well anyhoo back to the 446 she has a 3ph ,rear pto ,wheel weights & chains plus he thinks it has a holding valve. He was wanting $600 for the tractor I asked him if he would take $500 and he said he would.

So after shmoozing on C.C.I for a couple of months and listening to Uncle Tom & co I think that sounds like a fair price. What say you?

Sounds like he ran it out of oil. Shouldnt be too expensive to fix
If you're lucky it will just be a piston with a nice little hole burnt in it.A lot better than torn up cylinder walls and broken rods and such! Please post some pics after you pull the head.
I'm holding out for bad valve seats or if I'm really lucky carbon under the valve seats. He says the 446 motor was swapped for a 448, its a hotrod  ,no hood scoop though, bummer.

The $500.00 price tag is a lot fairer to you Mark, than to him.

3 pt hitch - $400.00

PTO - $150.00

Wheel weights - $125.00 minimum if they are the plastic ones- more if there are 2 pair of cast iron weights

Tire chains - $40.00

That adds up to $715.00 and you are getting a free tractor and deck tossed in.

BTW........the rod is broken.

I prefer to think the worst and then hope for a pleasant surprise. No matter what............this is too good of a deal to pass up. Don't mess around. Go get that tractor before he changes his mind or someone else beats you to it.

Mark,
It's OK to talk about brands other than Colt, Case or Ingersoll on this site providing you do so in the OFF TOPIC section. BTW, what year is your Behemoth?

My 60" behemoth as far as I know is a 1985 and resides or will reside under my 448 when everthing starts going back together, thatsa one heavy deck.

Are right who was that masked man that was giving away the free bad vibes. :sidelaugh:

I just got back from picking up the 446 and I just couldn't wait so I pulled the head off and sure a [email protected]@tin it has a broken rod but I already kinda knew that.

I don't remember where I read about the rope trick maybe Hydriv don't remember to many dead brain cells. But the cyl looks good must have snapped at the crank. Other side has 100 lbs compression.

Couldn't get it any cheaper than $500 but I was able to snag his 48" snowcaster for $150, doesn't look like it was used much but I noticed he must have hit a few rocks with it the auger has a few rough spots but otherwise it looks good.

Tractor needs a good cleaning but its not in to bad of shape. I noticed there is a push pull valve on the floor and its hooked to the hyd system is this for selecting what you want to use the deck lift cyl or the 3ph? It also has the seperate holding valve underneath.

Sorry about the broken rod but.................

And speaking of BUTTS, you've got horseshoes residing in yours because you still got a smokin' deal on what you picked up today. Decent snow casters are worth $350.00 and up any day.

Yes.. this tractor also has a selector valve to isolate the 3 pt from the center lift and visa versa. You don't see that too often. And now you tell us it came with a Holding Valve Kit too?????? Wow... you really like to annoy people, don't you. :sidelaugh:

Alls you have to do is get a cb :chopwood: & listen to channel 19 and it will scare you to think that that element that what you hear is behind the wheel of a big truck going down the road ,there nuts I tells ya nuts. Yeah I just got done looking at the parts manual and found out it is a flow control valve Hydriv. So what do you do if you don't have a flow control valve Hydriv?

OK....... so let's clear this up.

You said that you have a push pull valve on the FLOOR, YES??? That would be a selector valve.

Now you say that this tractor has also has a FCV and that should be a LEVER on a valve that is mounted to the right side of the dash tower.

IF this is correct, you just bought one of the most optioned out Case tractors that is out there, especially if the selector valve is OEM. This tractor is certainly worthy of a full restoration even if you just find a decent running but CORRECT donor engine for it.

Next you will be telling me that it also came with triple cast-iron wheel weights plus the optional quadruple cast iron front weight kit.
The wheel weights are Case Hydriv they have the Case logo in the center but they have a plastic cover. No that about does it for what the 446 came with although it has new front tires and the snowcaster has its own mule drive setup. At least now I have a lift bar I can use for a pattern to make a lift bar for that snowcaster & the 448 I'll be picking up later this week.I just went back and reread your post no it must not have a FCV it only has the valve on the floor Hydriv. When I was looking at the parts manual I was looking at the FCV and at that time I thought thats what I had.

I'm going to jack it up and take a look under there after I turn the pressure washes loose on it, old oil & grass clipping, it looks like its been awhile since it had a bath.
