I was curious if anyone used parts (transaxles) from a 200 or 400 series and modified them to steer regular but be 4x4. I'm liking the articulated units out there and seeing that as a good way to go. I'd be interested though to see if any other options were successfully done.

I have not seen anyone do what you are suggesting but apparently Bob (whipny1) has intentions in that direction. It's certainly not a small undertaking because there are several challenges involved.

However, considering the quality work Bob has already proven himself to be capable of, I suspect that you may see such an animal in the not too distant future. Hopefully, Bob will create a "build" thread on this site to show everyone how he went about it.

I'd be interested to see how he slaps the knuckles on and what source he uses (or if he has them fabricated).

If one were to use 100 series transaxles, which have bolt-on axle tubes, then custom tubes could be fabbed up to mount the knuckles to. Or flat bearing plates could be made to replace the tubes altogether and use CV driveshafts from the trans to the knuckles which could be supported by a fabricated axle.

Kinda related to making a a 4x4 Case, I'm mulling over making a 6x4 Case (is that what you might call it?) What, I can't think the name of those German WWII vehicles?

Instead of making all 4 wheel drive, extend the frame to the back and add a second rearend to the back and have 4 wheels in the back driving with the standard 2 wheel front steering.

Problem would be steering which individual left/right rear brakes might be necessary like the full size tractors along with a larger hydro pump to drive the two rearend motors.

Case 200's might be better for this as I can't imaigne yet what four 16" wheels in the back would look like along with long extended fenders.

I've been looking at adding the second axle to the back or possibly following a suggestion to use the spare axle I'm getting to setup a trailer that helps pull its own weight. I'd still like to see the progress on that project with the knuckles. I'm curious.

Bart, if they are accurate to the full size machines, the Case would be a rigid-frame and the IH would be articulated. Looking at them, it appears that's how they are constructed as the Case has no visible articulation joint.
