When going forward tractor surges, isn’t smooth, will just about pull the front tires off the ground, now the engine isn’t cause it, even if you back the rpm’s down it’ll still do it, not so much in high range just low, really annoying, all fluids are full,

What is the PIN on the 446 you are using? Also/or do you have a holding valve installed?

Not sure what your referencing as far as “pin’ goes, but I don’t have anything else installed on the tractor that’s not factory

He's referring to the S/N id tag either located on the tower or left hand frame at footrest. This will help others answer your question as to know what engine and carb you have.

The '76-'77 production tractors had a very small capacity metal hydraulic reservoir located under the battery making the correct oil level critical. If you do not have the dipstick that was included at the time of sale, the oil level from the top of the filler neck should be 7-1/4"

Ok thank you I’ll check that, and yes mine doesn’t have the dipstick in the hyd tank

The dipstick was actually shipped separately and included with the owner's manual. Usually, they were stored then in the tool compartment under the seat.

Please be very careful. These tractors are very light in the front end and the drivers weight is over, or behind, the rear axle. this exacerbates the front end coming up especially driving up a slope.
I've got a 4016, and I want to fix the leaping/lunging/surging problem in my 4016 as well. I recalled seeing a post about this a while ago, I had to spend 30 minutes searching for it I this may be it:
4016 forward lunging problem...

Just be careful, hydraulics are scary dangerous. ...Also, the 446 is probably different from the four digit models.

If anyone reading this remembers a better post on the travel-forward leaping/lunging problem, please chip in!

Thanks,

-Dave

Not sure if you are having this issue while starting to engage forward movement or while you are already moving. One can be a linkage or new operator issue, other more likely a hydraulic issue. With fluid power you get just that, direct power, no clutch, converter or belt slip etc. So you have to ease the travel lever and ideally at lower rpms. If your linkage is worn then it exaggerates this.
If happening once moving then likely a valve/hydraulic issue. Maybe this can help.

Thanks to all that replied, the problem was low oil, I made my own dipstick to check it now, funny thing also is now the engine doesn’t hunt anymore also, never would have guessed that the oil had that much effect on it. Thanks again
