I've seen conflicting information so I waste everyone's time and ask a dumb question....sorry.

I need to repaint my desert tan hood.

I've already ordered decals.

I'm inclined to get some trusty rustoleum white tinted to my color, and I prefer the power white look to the desert tan.

So:
Am I stupid to use "regular" oil-based enamel?
(If I make it too hard on myself, I'll never do it. And paying for it is out of the question... )

Am I stupid to choose a non-factory color?

All opinions welcome.

Watch out...some of the blue bloods will string you up for painting a case Desert Sand..... :lolno:

They'll insist you use Desert Sunset.

Paint it how you like it, the codes for major (Crossfire/PPG etc) paint Mfg's is around here somewhere......
It's only paint. Just dont go choppin hoods up to fit some weird engine in.

Bob,
No matter what you might read elsewhere, there is no such thing as "desert sand" or "desert tan" as a Case paint color. The correct name is Desert Sunset. Always has been and always will be in spite of the fact that some of the paint suppliers still get it wrong.

That color is still available from any Case/IH dealer worth their salt. Case sells it in gallons, quarts and rattle cans. Call around. Do not let the uninformed sell you Power Tan. That is a construction equipment color.

Painting it the correct OEM color keeps the tractor looking original and therefore helps maintain the tractor's value to a certain degree. If you read here for awhile, you will witness the revulsion some members have for tractors that are not painted correctly. eBoyDogs Zebra tractor is a prime example. There were cries for him to strip off the stripes.

Why swim upstream? You should be able to get the correct paint locally or you can order it from Messick's.

BTW.... there are no stupid questions.

It's your tractor...paint it any way you want  .I am curious....why white?Did you see another tractor painted white instead of Desert Sunset? I personally love the 2 tone Desert Tan/Power Red color scheme and detest the all Power Red look. :446:... Just my preference. I don't have the balls to do it, but I love the Zebra

Ok, I got my name wrong. Desert Sunset it is.

I'm a country boy who moved to the city in 1983 at the ripe age of 11. All the Case tractors I ever drove, both of them, were Power White. So to me, a case tractor is just supposed to be white. And what I've got is a mini Case tractor, so... shouldn't it be white?

Besides, my tractor, a 442, has kind of a hue to the tan, such that I wouldn't have thought of it as tan at all. I thought it was a really heavy cream color. Like a dingy white...
But then if you call it "Tan" I can see it that way.

I'm not hung up on it, and I am going for a professional/original condition look. So I suppose I should break down and buy the real color. But I wanted to hear what the experts had to say...

Thanks again,

Bob

Getting that particular paint name wrong is all too common an occurrence. The original Desert Sunset is more of a beige than it is tan.

The Case tractors that you saw and drove were 70 Series models dressed in Power White and Power Red. Those were phased in starting in 1969, a pivotal year for Case. The 70 Series replaced the venerable 30 Series and those models all bore Flambeau Red and Desert Sunset for many, many years. Power Red replaced the Flambeau in 1969. If you look at the photos in our site banners, you will see examples of Sunset/Power tractors.

The point being, Case tractors came in more than one color combo over the years.

Well, if you use Power White it is technically a factory color on ag tractors and also on wheels of later model GTs.
Since you have a 442 with snap-fast it is either a 1971 or 1972, and the ag tractors went to Power White in, I believe, 1974.
But the 400 series all look like baby 70-series tractors so I think it would look cool.
I would get a correct match for the Power White and go for it.
Recreate that memory from your childhood and share the photos with us, I've always thought Case got it wrong painting the late GTs backward compared to the big boys.

I must be growing old, on our farm all of our Case tractors were Desert Sunset and Power Red. They started using that color combination in 57' - 58' and kept it until the mid 70's.

I asked this question once on MTF and did get a response from I think Hydriv if I'm not mistaken. I asked if anyone had painted a Case LGT Power White with a Power Red frame like the 70 series Agri King eBoyDog posted. I think it was Hydriv who posted a picture of someone who had done that to either a 444 or a 446 but the paint work didn't look that good to me. The white wasn't the correct white if I remember correctly. I have yet to see a good rendition of the PW and PR paint combination. John, (tanandorange), I know you said in another thread you wanted to do this to your tractor. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Do I think Case LGTs should be painted their factory colors? YES. However, do I think Case missed the chance to make a cool LGT look like the big boys by painting their 400 series PW and PR? Yes. If done very well I thing a 400 series would look pretty cool in the Agri King color scheme. I think a 200 series has the potential to look just as cool if done well in those same colors.

The description doesn't bother me as that's just one that could be missed with the standard CL search and that's sometimes were you find a bargin!

The paint doesn't bother me, metal can be re-painted to the desired color.

What really bugs me is yet another tractor that has one of those chair seats stolen from a school!! Come on, does it really cost that much to buy a real seat for $40 bucks?!?!?!

BobNeumann, I have the same emotional ties to the real Case tractor colors too, I grew up with the understanding that the old Case tractors were Desert Sunset and newer ones were white, I'm hoping to paint my zebra 446 this summer or fall and when I do, it may very well be Power White since that was standard color for the real Case tractors in 1974.

:sidelaugh: :sidelaugh: :sidelaugh: I was gonna say somethin' bout that seat but I could go on and on. I did notice the tractor has Vredestein V61 front tires and the ad states the rear tires are new (albeit looks like truck tires to me). Maybe that's where the seat budget money went?????
