Ariena: The Lovejoy coupling is a popular brand coupling used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. So we have the shaft from the engine which say is 3/4". A coupling is put on the shaft (has key way) by tightening an allen screw. In between is a spider also called a Buna which absorbs shock and then you have another coupling that goes on the shaft of the hydraulic pump which may be a 5/8" shaft with key way for example. All of this mates together. The couplings come in many different shaft and key way sizes for different applications. With a Lovejoy, the two shafts can be mated by the couplings to transmit power from the engine to the hydraulic pump. It's a pretty neat device.
