Gas tank removal 4016

Maybe dumb question do I have to remove rear wheel to take gas tank off? I've got fender off still can't take bracket off that appears to hold it on. I don't take trans axle bolts out to remove rear bracket do I. Looks like it would be able to pull out if I did, but dont won't trans axle to fall down causing me more problems . Thanks in advance.
