Govemor issue. Help!!!!

Ok. This is a follow up to my ealier post about my engine racing. It was suggested that my govenor gear my be broke. Well, I pulled the engine and opened it up. I can see the gear and it is not broken. All the teeth are on it and the little black caps are there too. There is nothing loose, no broken pieces inside. Is there any other ideas on what may be wrong with this thing? I am not sure how to get all the way in to the govenor gear to replace it. Guess I would have to bring it in to a local repair center.

While you had it open, did you check the tab on the governor shaft? Make sure it's not missing and should be over the shaft in the governor gear assembly. Follow the instructions for adjusting the governor in the Kohler service manual. Make sure the throttle linkage/cable are operating and adjusted correctly. On my 76-444 I just bought, I noticed if I start it at full throttle, the engine will race like crazy for a second or two, then settle down. I found when cold, about half throttle, get it cranking over, add some choke it will fire right up and run good. No racing. Choke goes off as soon as it fires. Warm starts are the same but no throttle. Will start warm with a small amount of throttle and no choke also. Check butterfly in carb to make sure it operates freely too.
Make sure the high speed throttle stop is in place too. It's just a small "L" shaped bracket below the carb. See figure 6-48 in the Kohler service manual.
When i start it with the choke on it is fine. When I bring the throttle lever down and choke down is when it takes off. I can hold the govenor arm back with my finger and the butterfly valve in the carb is open. It starts to race like it was at full throttle and some. There is no stopping it unless the key is turned off. On the gear, the little black caps open about a eight of and inch and close. If I work the govenor lever back and forth I can see the end of the arm try to contact the axel that the gear is on but it cannot reach it. Is that axel pushed in too far? how do I get it out so it will contact tha arm again?
Re: Govemor issue. Update. Figured it out.

Ok here is what I found. The butterfly in the carb that the governer operates broke off the shaft and was laying inside the carb. You can see one of the screws still stuck in the shaft. I just need to figure out how to get that screw out and then find new allen head bolts that hold it on. Anyone have extras they what to get rid of?

Just as Gator predicted. :headscratcher: Good job Gator  :trink:

You may want to search for the missing screws :trink:
Billygoat = Gator? He definatly got me looking in the right direction. I did not see anything inside the motor. It is prety much spotless clean inside.

Naw- Gator was the one who said check the butterfly, not me. He suggested that in the other thread on this issue. As was said above, "Good call Gator"
