Linamar won't crank

Linamar engine in a ps4020. When I hit the key, the starter clunks like the solenoid is engaging but it doesn't crank, almost like a bad battery. The battery is fine (even jumped it) and if I keep trying, on the next or third or 10th or whatever try, it cranks real well and starts right up.
Seems like I read a thread similar to this problem on the Linamar engine but I can't seem to find it.
Is there something special going on with that starter motor?

The 3000 and 4000 tractors voltage to crank goes through PTO switch in off position, so turn PTO off on 4 times to see if clean contacts inside pto switch, this may not help your tractor but one cause of click, click, click. The Key switch is another place and wiring and connectors.

Insufficient voltage to pull in the starter solenoid is a common problem on the 3000/4000 tractors with Onan engines. As Gator noted, this can be related to contact corrosion in the variety of safety switches.

A common rework is to install a relay in the circuit, to improve the circuit integrity.

A PDF file with circuit sketch is attached. If you are comfortable with electrical work, this is an easy modification. You can pickup a common ISO relay at any automotive store.

Brian, I appreciate your diagram, and will keep it. I found the original diagram to be challenging enough w/o your work around. Yours doesn't look all that bad, but by the time I got the original all worked out I decided to wait till spring to decide whether to put it into the circuit.

Did you ever get a picture of the newer 4020 travel control level so I could see what it looked like? I suspect from the parts book that I already know the answer. That screw screws into the travel control level, right? So if mine has the screw broken off and previous owner filed it off, I need to find a different way to attach the tab at end of that neutral tab?

Thanks!

Mine did that intermittently, when I first got it last summer.

Found a less than tight, spade clip connection at the starter.

Cleaned it, pinched it a little with a pair of pliers, good to go.

Hope yours is as easy.
