There is probably Karma at work after having made fun of the PO for sealing the PTO valve with twine, because now I have run into a strange problem. Has anyone had difficulty removing the detent bonnet from the spool? It seems the spool adapter is captive inside the cover on mine. Not sure if I’m dealing with some debris in the way or perhaps some burr on the adapter or cover. I’ve tried flushing it with WD40 and hit it with compressed air. It seems to hang up as the detents pass through the narrowing on the bonnet. I’d rather not force it, but it might be that I need to be a bit more aggressive to get it out. Let me know I’m missing something in the disassembly. I only have the parts diagram to go by as I can locate a service manual for this model.

Nevermind. Some gentle heat did it. I could see in the diagram that there wasn’t any plastic or rubber to worry about under there. With it off I can see some burr on the inside of the cover that was hanging things up.
