Hello all,
My name is Michael, and I am a somewhat proud owner of a leaky 1974 646. I own a tree company in se pa, and I am getting to the age of needing equipment to take a load off me, and for doing tasks like moving wood, planting trees, and loading and unloading my deep root fertilizer skid sprayer on and off my truck. Also, only wanted to spend around 4g max.

I have been researching tractors, skid steers, and mini skids for months, and decided on a case 646 because of parts availability, size, and performance. Thus my search began, and I found one 2hrs away.

When I got there, I found out the owner used hyd oil instead of 15w40 in the hydraulic system, which is a common mistake. Also it did leak a bit of oil, which got worse as it ran longer. The engine purred well, original onan, so I wasn't to concerned. I couldn't pinpoint the leak as the undercarriage had never been cleaned.

I was so excited about even finding one of these, that we settled on 2100. Did I mention it has the 3pt option? I thought I got it for a fair price, and was hoping the leaking was something minor. So i got it home, and cleaned the underside to pinpoint the leak. Found it to be the oil pan, right near the frame!

My stomach turned into knots, but I've been telling myself I have a good machine, that I can afford to put some work into. I am not the most mechanical of people, and am very busy. I am considering taking it to an engine shop to get it taken care of quickly.

So here I am, now part of this informative forum.

Is there an easy way to get to the oil pan that's under the frame without removing the engine? I want so bad to be a proud case 646 owner, but right now I have a sour taste in my mouth. Any advice on the situation would be welcomed.

I'll post pictures soon, and I look forward to being a part of this forum!

Welcome aboard, Michael. I hope you find the forum informative and entertaining.

One of the Onan specialists will be along shortly with hands on experience for that pan removal and likely someone here has a spare pan (oil base) in good condition to sell you.

Just to let you know, a front quick attach system is available for this tractor, which excepts all the common mini-skid steer implements. For your line of work, that could include lift forks, root rakes, grapple buckets, stump grinders and more. Tool free change over of implements in 2-3 minutes. Drop me an eMail if interested. Initial conversion is cost effective, with a broad array of industry standard implements pricing according to their complexity.

First off, welcome to CCI.

As for your questions, is the oil pan leaking at the gasket, or does it have a small hole in it? Ive never had to take my 648's out, so I cant answer your question. Im sure theirs others here you have done it, and hopefully they chime in.

I wouldn't let that ruin your image of the brand though. Any brand tractor, big or small could have that issue. The case/ingersolls are pretty easy to work on, and IMO the 600 series are one of the best lb for lb machines in this size class. With a payload capacity of 600 lbs at full height, and the options of 3 point (which you have) and a PTO, they make great machines. The ccka's are torque monsters and an industrial engine.

As for price, pictures will tell us more, but it sounds like you did fine. The 3 point, depending on model, is worth 500-600 dollars by itself. Does it have a PTO, or wheel weights? The cast weights are worth approx. 100 dollars a plate, and the PTO 200ish.

Bottom line, don't get discouraged, you'll really like the versatility and capability of that machine once you get it fixed up. Even if you have to put a few hundred dollars into it, you'll still be doing fine, and could sell to make your money back if need be.

Welcome glad to have you here at CCI.
Sounds like to me you really got a good deal on your loader.
Like Casey pointed out the 3-point is a big deal big bucks. :rotflmao:
If the P/O didn't have the right oil in it what else did he not do.
Check out the manuals take a close look where your problem is might help.
Enjoy your time here and thanks for joining CCI..

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, it made me feel much better!

It doesn't have a pto like I've seen on other tractors, just the 3point. No wheel weights either. There is a hairline crack about 4inches long at the frame.

Just to give you all an update, I live next to a collision shop, and I spent all day today helping the owner put up a fence. In return, he will let me work on the tractor in his shop, and help me out along the way with welding, etc. It will be a good winter project for me, and a bit of an apprenticeship as well. Step one I guess is drain the fluids, and pull out the engine.

I also thought it'd be worth mentioning that I had the tractor out front of my house for 2 hours, and two people stopped and asked if it was for sale.

Where do I find a manual for this?

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on the Case 646, a fine tractor with great utility to do many tasks. :usa: :usa: :usa: I am sure you will get her shaped up with the help of the Forum. Here is the operators manual:

I would also research the technical library for additional information on hydraulics, attachments, etc.

The loaders are generally in strong demand.
