You can also do nothing! My 78, 222 sat outside for 20 years, maybe more from the PO and other than surface rust is in solid shape. I prefer to use my case so I expect scratches and dings to happen, and it would just be a waist of time and money to paint for me. My Case has at least another 40 years to go before its ready for that restoration paint job!
I share a similar sentiment. My 4016 has faded to a pink outside but is an incredibly rugged, well designed and built workhorse. I am more inclined to use it then polish it. I do keep it in the garage. To date it has 135 original hours on the original engine. It doesn't have even a drip of a leak anywhere on the machine. When I first got the tractor I went over every thing with a fine tooth comb.

My full mod restore on a 444 will be for the love, respect and ability of these tractors.

In the non-purist category, I use rattle can paints that are 'close' to factory like: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ole...ve-Enamel-Spray-Paint-6-Pack-250704/204583904

the one rim on 646, which is a '73 color scheme of power red and sunset yellow, had no paint on it, so it got cleaned up, put rusty metal primer on it and rattle can that was very close match to power red.. And its HARD to tell the difference.. Most likely because the old paint has faded..

I have used this with good success; I also used the rustoleum primer for rusty metal with a light sanding (400 grit) after priming. :paintjob:

View attachment 84849 Here is another paint scheme that "works" with the Case family............ My son's customized 210... Painted power white and power red.. Dave
That's the scheme I'm looking at for my 646. Flambeau Red & Federal Yellow never appeared on the Big Boys. I've always admired small tractors that look like big tractors, like the CaseIH 234/235/244/245 line, so this summer we're going Power Red and Power White. (White lift arms, red bucket...)

That’s the beauty of sand paper lol. I have a Ingersoll 4018 that will get a repaint sometime and I thought about doing it in Ingersoll Rand colors. Like the dark grey and red maybe. Like the tools
Just a heads up. Case, Colt and Ingersoll tractors were never made by or part of IR. Probably a good thing too in a way considering the chinese junk being sold by the company nowadays in their reciprocating compressor line and some of their tools.

I've been to a car show and met a guy that just clear coated his old square body Chevy truck he had in the show without fixing the rust and flaky paint and such, the thing was probably 5 or 6 different colors. He said "It took 40 years for it to look like this so why would I change it?". Definitely a mentality I consider when finishing out a project now.

I am well aware of that. They make good air compressors I can attest to that. The factory I was in maintenance in for 10 years and a 3 compressor module running Ingersoll. It wasn’t the brand I was trying to follow. I like their older air tools that was a dark grey with red lettering. Now it’s a blue color and red lettering. Easy killer

Sorry but I must admit I am at a loss here? Anyone can paint their GT's any color they want! The question though is whether you want to keep the tradition of painting it to authentic colors? The first question says just do you own thing and paint it pink yellow or even green and yellow. The second asks the hard question" do AI keep it authentic" If it's the first just go for it, but never, ever, bring t to this forums attention again!!! If you really want to stay focused though you need to follow case approved colors and advise..

Since we are talking about paint, years ago I restored a 1976 Case 444 with the intention of keeping it authentic. Bought my paint from a nearby Case IH dealer. When I strip the paint off the tractor the grill area of the hood was Desert sunset like the rest of the hood with no evidence of the grill area being black like a lot of tractors I've seen. I repainted the grill area desert sunset back, is this correct for the year or should it be black?

jrequarth, I agree with ras101 ... the grille on your tractor would have originally been black.

As to why you didn't see any evidence of that, I believe the factory procedure was to first paint the entire hood the primary color (such as Desert Sunset or later Power Red) and then mask off and spray the grille area black. So after years of exposure to the sun & elements, the black paint may have deteriorated to the point where it had all worn & flaked off.

Also, I doubt that they took time on the factory paint line to lightly sand the primary color prior to spraying the black. Instead, they probably just relied on the paint being fresh (not fully cured) to allow the black to bond to it. So there might have been some instances where, say for example, some hoods were painted on a Friday and sat all weekend (maybe even over a long holiday weekend) before the grille area was sprayed black. I'm thinking a scenario like that might result in the black paint having more of a tendency to flake/peel off years later and not show evidence of ever having been there in the first place.

Years ago at a tractor show, there was a JD-A painted Farmall red. The sign hanging on the tractor said "Sorry guy's the green paint was just too expensive"

He also had a tee shirt that read,"Silly farmer, tractors are red, crops are green".

Cheers,
Gordy

Paint whatever you want period. Has nothing to do with anything or anyone else but you. I know plenty here would want to see what you end up doing regardless so post again. But we paint many tractors a year and I want something different than the same other tens of thousands that all look the same and boring.... We like to stand out and be different. So we make them our "own" and change things up but there is no question in identity. Many of the ones we sell we also change up a little and its cool we know they cane from us years down the road when they resurface too. I am sure it "offends" plenty, oh well lol, and we will keep sharing them as plenty enjoy them too. And I don't think we have any issue with "focus" with our non purest paint and decals... PSI am going add power red wheel weights o the hood scoop, not loving the black like I thought I would lol These are just a few we did last year alone.
