Poor mans power steering

I have one question whats the difference in the poor mans power steering you pay 50.00 from dealer, than the ones from Amazon for 6.00 or 7.00. Is quality that much better? Seems to me it's just 2 washers with needle bearing sandwich between, am I missing something?

I'll wager a guess that the dealer ones have a real Timken, Fafner or NTN bearing in them, not a china POS.

Hmm. So going to McMaster, which should be a decent quality.. Even STAINLESS steel for 44x sized axles (3/4") is $9.38 each McMaster-Carr

Interesting what their site says about the 'steel' versions:
"Steel balls and washers allow these bearings to handle higher loads than bearings with stainless steel components. With an open design, they dissipate heat more efficiently than one-piece thrust ball bearings."
Those are $7 each .. McMaster-Carr

AFAIK I have 'ebay' quality thrust bearings on my 646.. With power steering and with a loader you put much, much, MUCH more load on those bearings than a 44x would ever be able to put on them and mine are holding up just fine. And they've been on the tractor for 5 years now.

my $.02 your mileage may vary..

Hi Rg 1 and group,
poormans ps is a good thing. 200 and 3000 series tractors use a 3/4" ID flat bearing with thin flat washers and 400 and 4000 series tractors use a 1" ID bearing.
However, an inspection of the surfaces of the spindles is needed as the flat bars on some spindles were not welded at a correct 90 degree angle. An inspection of this area on the spindles will show a high spot indicating an off angle. I have been able to have this surface turned on a large lathe to make it square and have been able to work some down by hand with a flat file with one smooth side on it.

I have considered adding bearings to the spindles on my 446 and have the machinery to easily true the mating faces, but really have not found the need even with front mounted weight or attachments as it steers so easily as is. Now 600 loader tractors, that would be a whole different kettle.

I have agonized over what Dundee said forever. My conclution though is that the modification is well worth the effort and really improves the steering experience. So whats the difference between Amazon's pricing and others? All about quality of the parts but also about what those parts are. To me it is all great that we are taking the time to even consider this modification let alone its price and longevity too. For me I have now done this mod on two of my GT's why - because it is more than worth the time and expense. I also have the updated axle pin too and yes before you ask I grease all steering joints at least twice a year - do you? I use my GT's (I have three now for mowing and snow blowing/plowing and help my neighbors during the winter too. I have my tires loaded, 250 lb wheel weights on the rear as I snow blow a couple of sloping driveways, etc. So my steering is very important to me...hope yours is too? So for me my issue was do I move yo power steering or not? I have three 446 GT's or not? My options were limited and my funds even more(I'm retired). I chose the Poor Man's steering option.

I purchased the thrust bearings & washers from McMaster Carr for our 446 years ago - still working fine - just keep them greased. MMC part prices are okay, but you do have to pay shipping, so keep that in mind when comparing costs. Our shop ordered from MMC several times a week, so I just added my parts an order and did not have to pay extra for shipping.

I will chime in as we are one of the ones selling 3 kits (200, 400, 600, 3000, 4000, 6000 series machines) for around $50.., A couple points. One is who you are supporting and help keep around to support you and you equipment, Amazon or small business's? Two, quality difference on most things. Three, make sure you know what you are comparing, We sell the kits from $45, That includes USA Quality parts, Free shipping and we include 2 hard to find extra thick correct snap rings and 2 roll pins in each kit (200-400, 3000-4000 series) to complete the install as well as a making a full information and install video. Items are all inspected and packaged together. Also unlike Amazon and Ebay etc most times when you buy from a small web business you do not pay tax if out of state....

I didn’t want to waste money on something I wasn’t sure would work. So I stacked two brass thrust washers where those Tinkin bearings go. With some grease the steering is night and day. I had to grind a notch to allow the roll pin that holds the spindle in the axle to clear. That was about 2 years ago and it’s not showing any wear.
