Started the 14hp Kohler the other day and moved the choke down, suddenly the govenor shot to full blast and the RPM's went to about a ten thousand (well it seemed like it). Turned the key off right away to stop it. Glad it wasn't in gear I may went through a wall. I'll have to check out the linkage one of these days.

Re: Waaoooooooh nelly Update

I started the engine and if I hold the govenor lever back manually it still races. ANyone know what I shold look for inside the engine? I am headed to the manuals to do some reserch. That way wen you guys tell me whats going on I will undestand what you are refering to.

your going to have to take the engine out of the tractor first.
to check the governor drain the oil and take the pan off (might be a good idea to drain the oil while the engine is in the tractor)
once the pan is off just look inside any damage should be visible (counter weights gone, stripped teeth, or lots of bits)

someone might have more detailed information.

as far as what the gear will look like

Are you sure the govenor linkage is tight on the shaft? And do is it adjusted properly, I had one that wasn't properly adjsuted that wanted to take off, re adjusting per the manual made a huge improvement in the engines desire to want to over rev. Wasn't so lucky with another one. One last thing to check not that it won't keep you from a rebuild but might change the parts you are after. Loosen the linkage and try to rotate the shaft a full 360 degrees, if you can the stop attatached to the shaft has come loose / broken and you will need to replace that. The gears are available new from any Kohler dealer and shaft should be also. Don't skimp on the gov. repairs as they are a pain to get in and work on.

If you can't manually hold carburetor at Idle the throttle plate off shaft in carburetor 2 small screws came out.

In repair you need find those 2 screws.
