I have a hard time finding a wire coat hanger any more. I am resolved to using these :

 

I being a penny pincher objected to paying $4.50 a peace for them Got some small trashed ( flux coming off) welding rod in an auction lot. Was working pipeline so spent a lot of time waiting for others to do their job so I could then do mine, and made up enough to last a lifetime

I would think 'piano wire' would work a lot better then a coat hanger. Check out a hobby shop. It usually comes in 36" lengths and different diameters.

 

If you have a local Menard's in your area, go to the miscellaneous hardware section, you should find them there for less money.

 

I have seen these called an industrial safety pin or shackle safety pin.

As I did a search one of the images that popped up was of a metal fishing string line. One of those fish clips would work in a pinch.

I ordered some from Bill at Barneveld implements,they were inexpensive

 

I find Menards stuff has improved in the last few years, and by quite a bit there, and seem to be cheaper then our local Fleet Farm for the most part........Curt
